The American Association of Orthodontists has launched “Smiles at 7” Day, an annual event on July 7 to promote early orthodontic evaluations by age 7.
The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) announced the official launch of “Smiles at 7” Day, to be recognized annually on July 7. The campaign is designed to educate parents on the importance of scheduling an orthodontic evaluation for their child by age 7—a pivotal stage in dental development.
“Smiles at 7 Day is an accessible and engaging way to inform the public about the critical role of orthodontic evaluations in a child’s dental health,” said Steven M. Siegel, DMD, AAO president. “Seeing an orthodontist by age 7 allows for early detection of bite issues, crowding of teeth, or other developmental concerns, often resulting in less invasive treatments and better long-term outcomes.”
Why Age 7 Matters
By age 7, most children have a mix of baby and permanent teeth, giving orthodontists valuable insight into jaw development and tooth alignment. An early evaluation can help prevent more complex issues later and reduce the need for invasive treatments.
The AAO emphasizes that early treatment can guide facial and jaw growth and create space for incoming permanent teeth—critical factors in minimizing the complexity and cost of future orthodontic work.
Orthodontic Practices Nationwide to Participate
Orthodontists across the United States will mark “Smiles at 7” Day with in-practice events, local outreach, and educational social media campaigns. The annual observance aims to increase public awareness and build relationships with families through timely, preventive care.
