The fraudulent emails are targeting AAO members, exhibitors, and sponsors who registered for the 2021 AAO Virtual Annual Session and offering to sell attendee and/or exhibitor information for purchase.

An email scam is targeting 2021 AAO Virtual Annual Session attendees, according to the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO). The association has learned that some AAO members, exhibitors, and sponsors have received numerous emails offering attendee and/or exhibitor information for purchase.

The AAO stated that these fraudulent emails are not coming from the association and its legal department has sent cease and desist letters to companies identified as having distributed such emails. The AAO shared a sample email on its website, and noted the incorrect meeting information and poor grammar in the message.

The AAO recommends that recipients of these emails look into their organization’s procedures for reporting SPAM. If the emails continue, recipients can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.
