The AAO is now accepting entries for its 2026 Ortho Innovator Awards, recognizing orthodontist-led innovations in two categories: Emerging Innovation and Market Impact Innovation.
The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) is now accepting submissions for its 2026 Ortho Innovator Awards. The awards, now in their eighth year, are part of the AAO’s ongoing effort to support innovation led by orthodontists.
Two Innovation Categories
Orthodontists who have invented a product or service designed to improve the practice of orthodontics, clinically and/or operationally, while upholding the standard of care can submit in one of two categories. The Emerging Innovation Award is for ideas that have progressed beyond concept and are demonstrated through a prototype, pilot, or minimum viable product. These innovations may not yet be commercialized but show strong potential to transform the field.
The Market Impact Innovation Award honors products or solutions that have already reached the commercial market, demonstrating real-world adoption and measurable impact.
Submission Requirements and Judging
Applicants must submit a 3 to 5 minute video created specifically for the contest. The video should feature the AAO member orthodontist(s) behind the development. Submissions will be judged by the AAO Committee on Technology based on uniqueness, originality, functionality, feasibility, and value to orthodontic practices.
Statement from AAO President
“The Ortho Innovator Awards reflect the AAO’s commitment to advancing innovation and technology in orthodontics,” said AAO President Dr Steven Siegel. “We look forward to seeing the products and services that will drive the future of orthodontics.”
Award Details and Additional Opportunities
The deadline for submissions is January 31, 2026. Winners will be announced at the 2026 AAO Annual Session in Orlando. The Market Impact Category Grand Prize includes a $2,000 travel stipend and complimentary exhibition space at the 2027 Annual Session. Grand Prize winners in both categories will receive an award presented at the 2026 event.
Applicants may also express interest in participating in the 2026 AAO OrthoTank start-up pitch event, to be held live at the Annual Session. The pitch event is modeled after the television show Shark Tank and allows selected start-ups to pitch to a panel of judges for potential funding support.
