Dr Nandakumar Janakiraman has been appointed Chief Academic Officer and Dean of the Georgia School of Orthodontics’ 36-month residency program.


The Georgia School of Orthodontics announced that Dr Nandakumar Janakiraman has been named Chief Academic Officer and Dean of the school’s 36-month residency program. He previously served as the school’s Director of Research for 6 years.

Background and Career

Janakiraman is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and a member of both the American Association of Orthodontists and the Southern Association of Orthodontists. His academic contributions include more than 36 peer-reviewed publications and two textbook chapters. His research has focused on orthodontic techniques and appliances, reevaluation of commonly used systems, and 3D technology integration. His clinical interests include reducing treatment times and improving the biomechanical understanding of orthodontic methods.

Education and Academic Roles

He earned his dental degree in 1998 from Government Dental College, Bangalore University, and a master’s in orthodontics in 2002 from Government Dental College, NTR University of Health Sciences. In 2010, he moved to the United States to join the Fellowship Program in Orthodontics at the University of Connecticut. He completed a Master of Dental Science and a Certificate in Orthodontics at the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine.

Janakiraman has held faculty roles at the University of Connecticut and served as Assistant Professor and Director of Research at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry, Division of Orthodontics.

Responsibilities in New Role

In his new position, Janakiraman will oversee GSO’s academic mission, including curriculum development, faculty mentorship, and innovation in orthodontic education and patient care. According to Chris Lazzara, Co-Founder and Board of Trustees Member of the Georgia School of Orthodontics, “Throughout his career, Dr Janakiraman has exemplified the highest standards of academic, clinical and professional excellence. His vision aligns deeply with GSO’s founding principles, including a commitment to access, inclusivity, and the advancement of orthodontic education, research, and patient care.”

He is scheduled to deliver the keynote address at the 59th Indian Orthodontic Conference in November.
