The new group aims to strengthen collaboration between the ADA and specialty organizations, including the American Association of Orthodontists.

The American Dental Association has established a Task Force on Specialty Engagement, bringing together representatives from all recognized dental specialties to improve communication and collaboration, according to ADA News. The task force held its initial meeting virtually in January.

The group was created through a resolution from the ADA Board of Trustees. ADA president Richard Rosato, DMD, appointed trustee Randall Markarian, DMD, an orthodontist, to serve as chair. Fellow trustees Rita Cammarata, DDS, a pediatric dentist, and James Mercer, DDS, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, were also appointed as task force members.

According to the resolution, the purpose of the task force is “to identify opportunities for joint initiatives in areas of mutual interest and to explore strategies to enhance specialist membership in the ADA.”

Each participating specialty organization selected its own representative. The organizations invited to participate include the American Association of Orthodontists, American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, American Academy of Periodontology, American Association of Endodontists, American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, American Academy of Oral Medicine, American Academy of Orofacial Pain, American College of Prosthodontists, American Association of Public Health Dentistry, American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists, and the Academy of General Dentistry.

The task force will provide progress reports to the ADA Board of Trustees throughout the year and will aim to present actionable recommendations for the Board’s consideration.
