John Burke, DMD, a Lowell, Mass, orthodontist, has agreed to pay $800,000 to settle allegations that he improperly billed the state’s Medicaid program, resulting in thousands of dollars in overpayments.
According to the Boston Herald, Burke was among the highest-billing MassHealth orthodontists. Between September 2006 and August 2011, he reportedly received close to $5.5 million, prompting MassHealth to report him to the state attorney general’s office for investigation.
The attorney general’s office found that Burke took certain x-rays not permitted by MassHealth regulations.
In addition to the financial settlement, Burke also agreed to resign as a MassHealth provider and to not treat any new patients.
