Every orthodontist strives to have the design of his/her office reflect the personality of the practice. And it’s a designer’s job to make that happen. Orthodontic Products asked Scott Somers, president of ARCH-101 Architects, to tell and, more importantly, to show us how he did just that.

What the Doctor Wanted: A state-of-the-art, residential-style building that contextually blended into the heavily treed neighborhood. He wanted the exterior of his building to make a quiet statement; one that reflected his personality and the level of service he offers his patients. Aesthetically, he wanted a Craftsman-inspired exterior with a complimentary contemporary interior. The office has a conference room and “library” room to share with the community. He also wanted a warm and inviting office throughout. The fireplace in the library was an important feature in achieving this goal.
Interesting Design Aspects: There are many design elements that hint toward a Craftsman style, such as lighting, columns, and interior wood trim features. Mahaffey wanted an open-office concept while maintaining some sense of privacy for patients. The game room, brush area, and on-deck area are integrated into one distinct location with playful elements such as curved walls, soffits, and ceilings; lighting; flooring patterns and materials; and the creative uses of color.
