The American Dental Association (ADA) installed Gary L. Roberts, DDS, a general dentist from Shreveport, La, as its president for 2017. Roberts was installed at the recent meeting of the ADA House of Delegates in Denver, Colo.

Joseph P. Crowley, DDS, a general dentist practicing in Cincinnati, Ohio, was named the new president-elect of the ADA, while George Lewis Mitchell Jr, DMD, of Gadsden, Ala, was elected second vice president at the same meeting.

In addition, five new trustees were installed at the House of Delegates meeting. The new trustees to the ADA Board include William Roy Thompson, DDS, Murfreesboro, Tenn, who will serve as trustee from the 6th District, which encompasses Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee, and West Virginia; Kirk M. Norbo, DMD, Purcellville, Va, who will serve as trustee from the 16th District, which encompasses North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia; Kenneth McDougall, DDS, Jamestown, ND, who will serve as trustee from the 10th District; Billie Sue Kyger, RPh, DDS, Gallipolis, Ohio, who will serve as trustee from the 7th District, which encompasses Indiana and Ohio; and Cesar R. Sabates, DDS, Coral Gables, Fla, who will serve as trustee from the 17th District, which encompasses Florida.

Roberts, an ADA member for 42 years, served as the 12th District trustee to the ADA House of Delegates. He served on the ADA Council of Ethics, Bylaws, and Judicial Affairs, and the Council on Government Affairs, and was chair of the Committee on Budget and Finance. He served as a trustee liaison to the Council on Dental Practice, Council on Annual Sessions, and Council on Dental Education and Licensure.

A past-president of both the Louisiana Dental Association (LDA) and the Northwest Louisiana Dental Association, Roberts was editor of the Journal of the Louisiana Dental Association for 8 years. In 2007, he received the LDA’s highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award. Roberts is a member of the Academy of General Dentistry and Ark-La-Tex Academy of Dentistry. He is a fellow of the American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy.

Roberts earned his dental degree from the Baylor College of Dentistry.

Crowley, a graduate of the Ohio State University College of Dentistry, has served as the 7th District trustee to the ADA House of Delegates since 2012. Active in the Ohio Dental Association, he served as its president in 2005-2006. He was president of the Cincinnati Dental Society in 1996.

Mitchell has been an ADA member since 1973 and has served in many leadership positions during that time. He has also been president of both the Alabama Dental Association and the Alabama Academy of General Dentistry. Mitchell earned his dental degree from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry.
