MSO Michael HippThe Midwestern Society of Orthodontists (MSO) honored Michael S. Hipp, DDS, Des Moines, Iowa, with the Earl E. Shepard Distinguished Service Award during the 2012 MSO Annual Session earlier this month. The award was created in honor or Earl E. Shepard, DDS, to recognize orthodontists for outstanding service to orthodontics and their community.

Hipp (pictured) received his DDS from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1979 and his certificate in orthodontics and Masters of Science degree from the University of Iowa in 1981. He began private practice in Des Moines, joining Drs Robert W. Young and C. Charles Collins, where he remains practicing today.

Hipp began his involvement in organized dentistry by serving on numerous committees for the Des Moines District Dental Society. He was president of the Iowa Society of Orthodontists in 2000-2001. He received the Iowa Dental Association’s President’s Award in 2002 and currently serves as a trustee and program chair. He has served MSO as a member of the MSO delegation to the AAO House, MSO president 2007-2008, and as MSO’s representative to AAOPAC for 8 years, including 6 years as AAOPAC chair. He has been on the advisory committee for the Iowa Medicaid Program and the orthodontic consultant reviewing cases for priority for the past 28 years. He also has served since 1989 as an orthodontic consultant to the Iowa Dental Board. For the past 24 years, Hipp has been a board member and chair for the Des Moines Health Center.
