drtSteven Tinsworth, DMD, Bradenton, Fla, received the 2014 Oren Oliver Distinguished Service Award from the Southern Association of Orthodontists (SAO). This award was established in 1978 to recognize an individual member of the SAO who has made a significant commitment to the organization and helped it accomplish its mission.

Tinsworth attended the University of Kentucky College Of Dentistry, served in the US Air Force Dental Corps as captain, and completed his orthodontic training at LSU School of Dentistry in New Orleans. He served as the first orthodontic graduate representative (of more than 50 dental schools) to the American Student Dental Association, and later started his practice.

Tinsworth has been involved with the Manatee Dental Society, Florida Association of Orthodontists, SAO (as president), and American Association of Orthodontists (as a delegate) and its Council on Orthodontic Practice (as chair). In 2008, he collaborated on and served as executive producer of the infotainment movie “Crooked.”

Tinsworth was made a fellow of the American College of Dentists in 2005. He was acknowledged as Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year in 2008 and was the first recipient of the Chamber of Commerce/Bradenton Herald Individual of Merit Healthcare Award in 2013. This year, he took his place among the Top Dentists of Sarasota and was a finalist in the Bradenton Herald Peoples’ Choice this year.

Beyond his professional activities, Tinsworth keeps active in local activities and charities. In addition, he was a catalyst in ensuring the fluoridation of Manatee County and City of Bradenton waters was brought to optimum levels.
