The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America, New York, will provide dental plan members with discounts on products that contain the tooth decay fighting sweetener Xylitol.

An all-natural sweetener found in fruits and vegetables, Xylitol has been proven to reduce cavity-causing bacteria. According to the company, studies show that as little as 6 grams of Xylitol per day can reduce cavities by up to 80%.

Guardian is one of a growing number of dental insurers to offer discounts on Xylitol products through a dental PPO network. Discounted products will be available through Epic Dental, a leading provider of dental care products.

According to Epic Dental, Xylitol has also been proven to serve as a defense against ear and upper respiratory infections. Clinical studies have shown that children who regularly chewed 8 grams of Xylitol gum per day had an almost 40% reduction in ear infections.

"We want our discounts to motivate parents and teachers to encourage children and adults alike to brush, floss, and chew their gum. But only if the gum contains a proven cavity fighter like Xylitol," said Richard Goren, DDS, second vice president of Guardian Group Dental. "We are offering Xylitol discounts at a time when there is mounting evidence about the connection between good oral health and overall health. Guardian is committed to providing high-quality, flexible, and affordable dental benefits to keep our members healthy and smiling."

Through the Epic Dental discount program, Guardian members are eligible to receive a free trial of products such as gum, mints, mouthwash, and toothpaste that contain Xylitol, or the option to receive a 50% discount off products purchased that contain Xylitol. They may also get a 25% discount on ongoing orders for products containing Xylitol.
