Nahid_MalekiNahid Maleki, DDS, MS, of Washington, DC, has been elected the 2015-2016 secretary-treasurer of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO).

“It is an honor and a privilege to be elected to serve as secretary-treasurer of the AAO,” said Maleki. “Working on behalf of AAO members to support them in carrying on our tradition of bringing our patients the highest level of orthodontic care is a responsibility I welcome.”

Maleki was elected to the AAO Board of Trustees (BOT) by the Middle Atlantic Society of Orthodontists (MASO) in 2008. MASO is a constituent organization of the AAO, serving members who practice in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania (east of the Alleghenies), Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands.

A graduate of Georgetown University School of Dentistry’s orthodontic program, Maleki became a member of the orthodontic faculty immediately upon graduation. A tenured associate professor, she served on the faculty for 14 years. Upon the closing of Georgetown’s dental school, Maleki opened her private orthodontic practice in 1992.

Maleki is active in organized orthodontics at local, state, regional, and national levels. She has served on many AAO and MASO councils and committees, including 8 years on the AAO Council on Governmental Affairs, serving 1 year as chair. Since joining the AAO BOT, she has served on numerous committees and task forces. In addition to her AAO duties, Maleki is also a member of the Board of Directors of the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation.

She is a past president of MASO and the District of Columbia Society of Orthodontists, and spent 12 years representing MASO at the AAO House of Delegates.

In addition to membership in the AAO and MASO, Maleki maintains membership in other professional organizations including the American Dental Association, the District of Columbia Dental Society, and the World Federation of Orthodontists. Maleki is a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, an honorary dental society, and has been listed in Who’s Who in the East and Who’s Who in American Education. Her scholarly articles have been published in a number of professional, refereed scientific journals.
