The newly installed ABO president, Dr Valmy Pangrazio-Kulbersh, is a professor and director of the orthognathic surgery and early treatment clinics at the University of Detroit Mercy’s Graduate Orthodontic Program.
The American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) installed Valmy Pangrazio-Kulbersh, DDS, MS, of Bloomfield Hills, Mich, as president for the year beginning May 1, 2020. Kulbersh is the first woman to serve as ABO president. David G. Sabott, DDS, MS, of Erie, Colo, will serve as the current president-elect, and will become ABO president for the 2021-2022 term.
Other 2020-2021 officers of the ABO include Patrick F. Foley, DDS, MSD, of Mundelein, Ill, as secretary/treasurer; and Nicholas D. Barone, DDS, MS, of Lincoln, RI, who is the immediate past president.
Each ABO director represents one of the eight constituent organizations of the AAO and serves an eight-year term, which culminates in the position of the president. The ABO directors are responsible for establishing policy with regard to the board certification of specialists in orthodontics.
During her tenure as an ABO director, Kulbersh has represented the Great Lakes Association of Orthodontists. As ABO president, she also serves as chair of the ABO finance committee, and as the ABO liaison to numerous professional organizations, including the AAO, the College of Diplomates of the ABO, the Graduate Orthodontic Resident Program, the World Federation of Orthodontists, and the Society of Educators.
Kulbersh is a professor and director of the orthognathic surgery and early treatment clinics at the University of Detroit Mercy’s Graduate Orthodontic Program. She was also affiliated with the Detroit Medical Center, where she was a member of the craniofacial anomaly and cleft lip and palate treatment team.
David G. Sabott, DDS, MS, ABO president-elect
As a former ABO director, Sabott has represented the Rocky Mountain Society of Orthodontists. The new president-elect is a member of the executive, clinical, and certification committees. Dually trained in both pediatric dentistry and orthodontics, he maintains a private practice in Brighton, Colo. Sabott is a past president of the Rocky Mountain Society of Orthodontists, the Angle Southwest Component of the Edward H. Angle Society, the Colorado State Orthodontic Society, and the Boulder County Dental Society. He is a member of the AAO and the ADA, and served on the AAO Council on Insurance and the AAO Council on Library Resources. Sabott is also a regent of the AAO Foundation. In 2009, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Rocky Mountain Society of Orthodontists.
