Ahead of the start of the AAO Annual Session in San Diego, Carestream Dental, Atlanta, announced several advancements to its CS Solutions for Orthodontics portfolio, including a new CBCT system, software updates, and recent third-party validations.

The company’s new CS 8100SC 3D extraoral imaging system is built on the 2D imaging capabilities of the CS 8100 family of CBCT systems. The CS 8100SC 3D combines 2D and cephalometric imaging with low-dose CBCT imaging and 3D model scanning applications, allowing orthodontists to add 3D imaging to their practice while maintaining access to 2D/ceph image quality without adding a new CBCT unit. The CS 8100SC 3D includes panoramic, cephalometric, CBCT, and model scanning capabilities.

The CS 8100SC 3D features a fast scan mode—as little as 3 seconds for a lateral 18 x 24 cm image—and its software recognizes anatomical structures and traces them automatically. At 72.5 inches wide, the system is designed to fit into practices of almost any size.

Carestream Dental is also previewing two new software modules at AAO that expand the CS Solutions for Orthodontics portfolio. CS Model+ (not yet available for sale) is the next evolution of CS Model. After creating an automatic digital setup of a digital impression, the software automatically segments, numbers, and measures teeth. It can also simulate tooth movement, which can be used to further case acceptance. CS Model+ also automatically generates an orthodontic report, which allows users to streamline workflow and address orthodontic analysis.

To address orthodontists’ needs for airway evaluation and analysis, the company is also previewing its CS Airway module (not yet available for sale). The software module allows orthodontists to segment airway with a few clicks to visualize airway constrictions and communicate areas of concern to the patient.

In San Diego, Carestream Dental will also highlight several recent validations of the CS 3600 intraoral scanner by third-party orthodontic companies. The scanner, which features open architecture, has been validated for use by 3M, Ormco Corp, CA Digital, and Image Instruments.

  • 3M has validated and approved data sets captured by the CS 3600 for use with the 3M Incognito Appliance System.
  • Ormco Corp has confirmed .STL files from the scanner are compatible with its Insignia software and custom appliance system.
  • CA Digital has validated the CS 3600 for use with its CA clear aligner system.
  • Digital data sets from Carestream Dental’s intraoral scanners and 3D volumes from its CBCT extraoral systems have been validated for use in Image Instruments’ orthodontic imaging software, OnyxCeph³™.
