According to the Associated Press, the Colgate-Palmolive Co has recalled counterfeit toothpaste sold in discount stores under its label. The 5-ounce tubes, which may contain a poisonous chemical, were sold in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Maryland.

The FDA discovered the potentially dangerous chemical (diethylene glycol, commonly found in antifreeze) in a routine check. The counterfeit tubes are littered with misspellings and state that the product is made in South Africa.

The importer, MS USA Trading Inc, North Bergen, NJ, said consumers of the counterfeit toothpaste can return them to their original purchase place for a refund.

Currently, no illnesses from the counterfeit product have been reported. Colgate is working with officials to identify the counterfeiters, who may be working in South Africa.
