BioMeDevice introduces the gumEase g-100, a dental mouthpiece that can be used on its own or in conjunction with conventional anesthesia to provide pain relief without the side effects or complications of drugs.

According to the company, the gumEase G-100 is an over-the-counter, latex-free, disposable device that is inserted into the upper and lower sulci, where it then delivers a soothing, cool temperature to the maxillofacial nerves, quickly diminishing pain across a wide area of the mouth. The mouthpiece is prepared by storing it in a conventional freezer until it reaches a sub-zero temperature. Proprietary solutions inside the mouthpiece prevent it from freezing, allowing it to form comfortably within the patient’s mouth for several minutes. Pain reduction of 90% is achieved in 2 to 3 minutes, and lasts for up to 20 minutes; the process can be repeated as often as needed. The device also holds promise for situations where needle use is limited or avoided, such as patient needle phobia. The gumEase G-100 has been approved by the FDA.

“It gives dentists an option they didn’t have before,” said Tay McClellan, BioMeDevice CTO. “They can manage patient pain easily in a wider range of situations. Now it’s not a problem to have a patient who can’t use drug-based anesthesia.”
