Smile for a Lifetime, Jonesboro, Ark, a national nonprofit that provides scholarships for free orthodontic treatment to underprivileged children, has launched a new local chapter in Orange County, Calif.
Services will be offered through Ormco’s Sybron Learning Center, located in Anaheim, Calif.
"The gift of a new smile is a life-changing opportunity for kids right here in our own community," said Matt O’Connell, executive vice president at Ormco. "Orange County has a reputation as one of the wealthiest communities in the country, but many don’t realize we also have a significant population of families for whom braces simply aren’t within their budget. Thanks to the great work of Smile for a Lifetime, we can make a tremendous difference in the lives of children through the gift of a beautiful, self-confident smile."
Children will be considered for free treatment through an application/nomination process whereby an adult close to the child—a teacher, coach, relative, or mentor—submits an application form, along with a letter of recommendation and a photo of the child, clearly showing his or her teeth. Applications will be reviewed by local board members and are being accepted through the Orange County chapter. The group plans to select at least six children to begin treatment this year.
