Align Technology Inc, San Jose, Calif, has announced its next-generation iTero® Element™ Intraoral Scanner with improved imaging technology designed to enable significantly faster scan speed, accuracy, intuitive operation, and visualization capabilities.

The iTero Element is engineered to deliver everything that the iTero Scanner does, but in a more compact footprint with greater capabilities. It features a 40% smaller and lighter wand with built-in controls; a 19-inch, high-definition, multi-touch display; and integrated gyro technology for rotation of models on screen. In addition, its defogging system is designed to instantly defog the wand.

The new image sensor is engineered to enable up to 20 times faster scan speeds, with color scanning to distinguish between gingival and dental tissue for more precise clinical evaluation. Additionally, iTero Element scans are designed to work with the existing iTero orthodontic and restorative workflows, including laboratory workflows, custom-milled models, open .STL export, custom implant abutment, and chairside milling partners.

The Element also includes the Invisalign Outcome Simulator, a chairside application that enables doctors to help patients visualize how their teeth may look at the end of Invisalign treatment.

Availability of the iTero Element Intraoral Scanner is expected in the second half of 2015.
