The new Smart View – Detect feature integrates with the DS Core platform to help clinicians accurately identify periapical radiolucencies and enhance patient consultations.
Dentsply Sirona has launched Smart View – Detect, an FDA-cleared and CE-approved AI diagnostic aid designed to help clinicians detect periapical radiolucencies (PARLs) in cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans.
AI-Assisted Detection
According to the company, PARLs affect approximately 52% of adults and often require endodontic treatment. Smart View – Detect visually highlights specific areas within CBCT scans where potential PARLs may be present, aiming to reduce the risk of overlooked findings during everyday practice.
In an internal clinical study, clinicians using the AI-assisted tool increased tooth-level PARL detection sensitivity by approximately 46% compared to unaided review, without a meaningful increase in false positives.
Patient Communication
The visual presentation of the findings is also intended to help patients better understand their diagnosis during consultations.
“Smart View – Detect is designed to support dentists at two important moments—when reviewing complex CBCT data and when explaining findings to patients,” says Wolf-Dieter Perlitz, senior director DS Core at Dentsply Sirona, in a release.
System Compatibility and Availability
The feature is available through DS Core, Dentsply Sirona’s cloud-based platform. It is compatible with newly installed and existing Dentsply Sirona CBCT systems, including Orthophos S, Orthophos SL, and Axeos.
It supports fields of view ranging from 5×5 to 17×11 and works with both newly acquired and historical CBCT scans transferred from Sidexis 4 into DS Core. Users do not need to purchase new imaging equipment to access the added capability.
Smart View – Detect will be available starting May 12, 2026, in the US and Europe. It requires a DS Core Standard or Advanced subscription.
