The ADA Forsyth Institute has announced the appointment of James M. Boyle, III, DDS, MS, as chair of its Board of Directors, alongside four new members who bring expertise in clinical practice, corporate affairs, and oral health research.

Boyle, a private practitioner and the 3rd District Trustee of the American Dental Association (ADA), has held numerous leadership roles within the ADA and is recognized for his work in education and accreditation. He will lead a board that now includes Jonathan Knapp, DMD; Elizabeth “Betsy” Shapiro, DDS, JD; David Kochman, JD; and Maria Emanuel Ryan, DDS, PhD.

“We are truly excited to work with this new board, whose incredibly high level of expertise, experience, and passion for oral health innovation will help take AFI to the next level,” said AFI CEO Wenyuan Shi, PhD.

Knapp, a general dentist and ADA 1st District Trustee, is active in dental informatics and oral health advocacy. Shapiro, the ADA’s interim executive director, brings experience in policy and governance. Kochman, from Henry Schein, and Ryan, from Colgate-Palmolive, add corporate and research leadership perspectives.

The board will guide the Institute’s mission to advance oral and overall health through research, translational science, and global outreach. Key focus areas include microbiology, inflammation, and craniofacial biology.

The ADA Forsyth Institute formed in 2023 through the merger of the ADA and the Forsyth Institute and remains a nonprofit dedicated to innovation in dentistry and community-based care.
