The American Dental Association (ADA) has named its officers for 2019. Chad P. Gehani, DDS, an endodonist from Queens, NY, is the new president-elect. He will assume the role of president of the ADA in September 2019.
In addition, Craig W. Herre, DDS, a general dentist in Leawood, Kan, was elected second vice president; and Ted Sherwin, DDS, a general dentist based in Orange, Va, was elected as treasurer at the ADA’s recent House of Delegates meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Since 2014, Gehani has served as the Second District trustee to the ADA Board of Trustees, and was a delegate in the House of Delegates from 2000 to 2014. Gehani was previously the president of the New York State Dental Association and the Queens County Dental Society.
Over the course of his career, Gehani has earned a number of fellowships from prominent organizations, including the International College of Dentists, American College of Dentists, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. In addition to the ADA, Gehani is a member of the American Association of Endodontists and the Indian Dental Association (USA). Gehani has received several awards, including the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, which recognizes Americans who dedicate their lives to community service, from the Ellis Island Honor Society, and the Distinguished Service Award from the Pierre Fauchard Academy, New York Section, in 2008.
Gehani graduated from the University of Mumbai (India) and from the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, and currently practices in Queens, NY.
Herre served as a delegate to the ADA House of Delegates from 2010 to 2018. He recently chaired the ADA Council on Communications and also has served on the ADA’s National Oral Health Literacy Advisory Committee. He was named Dentist of the Year by the Kansas Dental Association in 2017 and previously served as the organization’s president. He was also the president of the Fifth District Dental Society in Kansas. Herre has earned fellowships from the Pierre Fauchard Academy and the American College of Dentists.
Herre graduated from the University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Dentistry. He practices dentistry in Leawood, Kan, and is a founding member of the city’s chamber of commerce.
Sherwin has been active in organized dentistry for much of his career. He has served on numerous committees at the national, state and local levels. His experience in financial leadership includes twice serving as treasurer at the Virginia Dental Association (VDA), for a total of 5 years. He has also served on the ADA Board Finance Committees and 2 years on the House Special Committee of Financial Affairs. He is a former president of VDA, has served twice as president of the Shenandoah Valley Dental Association, and has been a member of the ADA House of Delegates for 14 years, serving as the District 16 budget chair six times.
In addition to the appointments of Gehani, Herre, and Sherwin, four new trustees were installed at the House of Delegates meeting: James D. Stephens, DDS, a dentist practicing in Palo Alto, Calif; Susan Becker Doroshow, DDS, a general dentist practicing in Skokie, Ill; Paul R. Leary, DMD, a dentist practicing in Smithtown, NY; and Linda Johansen Edgar, DDS, a dentist practicing in Federal Way, Wash. The ADA Board of Trustees formulates and reviews policies and programs and makes recommendations to the members of the ADA’s governing body, the House of Delegates.
