For 9-year-old Erik Fosstveit of Mountainville, NY, tooth brushing should be a multisensory experience.
The third-grader captured first prize in a national toothbrush design contest sponsored by Dr. Fresh, Buena Park, Calif, maker of fun kid’s oral care products, in celebration of February’s National Children’s Dental Health Month. Erik’s winning idea was the “Whooshbrush Gourmet Scented Light Up Musical Toothbrush.”
In the contest titled “Be A Dental Inventor,” kids were asked to design a toothbrush they thought would motivate their peers to brush thoroughly and regularly.
“Kids will want to brush their teeth all day with my brush,” said Fosstveit, whose brush has a tooth-shaped button at the base that lights up in rainbow colors for 2 minutes when pressed. The brush also sings “brusha brusha brusha,” and features a choice of seven different gourmet-scented handles, including the inventor’s favorite, blueberry.
Fosstveit won a $500 US Savings Bond, as well as an all-expense-paid trip with a parent to the Disneyland Resort. While there, he will also meet with the design team at the Dr. Fresh headquarters in nearby Buena Park.
