Gilchrist & Soames, Chicago, recalled toothpaste made in China recently after independent tests showed some samples contained diethylene glycol.
According to an article on [removed]CNNMoney.com[/removed], The tainted toothpaste was shipped to hotels in Barbados, Belgium, Bermuda, Canada, the Dominican Republic, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Switzerland, Turks and Caicos, the United Arab Emirates, Britain, and the United States before the FDA alerted the company of possible health concerns on June 1. After independent lab tests were performed, the company recalled the toothpaste and asked hotels to destroy any remaining inventory.
Diethylene glycol is a kidney and liver toxin and a central nervous system depressant that is commonly used to make automobile antifreeze. The same chemical was found in counterfeit Colgate toothpaste 2 months ago.
