The University of Kentucky, Lexington, Ky, recently honored E. Preston Hicks, DDS, associate professor in the Department of Orthodontics in the College of Dentistry, with the Alumni Association’s 2008 Great Teacher Award. Hicks was one of six university professors to receive this year’s award, which recognizes excellence in the classroom.

Hicks has served in the Department of Orthodontics since 1987. He was instrumental is producing a 3-year master’s degree graduate program in orthodontics and developing curricula to integrate the discipline of orthodontics in the undergraduate dental program and in the pediatric dentistry residency.

Started in 1961, the Great Teacher Award recognizes professors who demonstrate excellence in teaching. The nominations are made by students. Selection of the award recipients is made by the University of Kentucky Alumni Association Great Teacher Award Committee, in cooperation with student organizations Omicron Delta Kappa and Mortar Board. Great Teacher Award recipients each receive a citation, an engraved plaque, and a $2,500 cash award.
