According to an article in the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Joseph Gould, DDS, a pioneer and educator in the field of orthodontics, has died from complications resulting from a fall. Gould was 100 years old.
Gould was a retired clinical professor emeritus of the orthodontics department at the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine in Cleveland. He was on the Case faculty for more than 50 years. He retired in 1994, but continued to be part of the orthodontics department for more than 8 years. He had a private practice for 50 years with offices in Shaker Heights and downtown Cleveland.
Gould, a past president of the Great Lakes Society of Orthodontists, joined the Western Reserve University School of Dentistry faculty, the forerunner of the Case dental school, in 1950. He served as director and clinical professor of the undergraduate and graduate departments of orthodontics. Later, when Western Reserve merged with Case, Gould helped form the orthodontics department at the school.
In 1993, the Cleveland Society of Orthodontists honored Gould with a plaque inscribed, "With Deep Appreciation of Loyal and Unselfish Service and Many Years of Orthodontic Education." In 1994, he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Alumni Association of the School of Dentistry at Case. He was also honored with the establishment of the Enlow/Gould Seminar Room in 1992 at Case.
