For Phoenix-based orthodontist Chris Murphy, DDS, his commitment to his patients’ futures extends beyond their orthodontic treatment. Four years ago, his practice launched The Murphy Orthodontics Scholarship Program to provide a $500 scholarship to a current or former patient who is a graduating high school senior. The scholarship may be applied toward tuition, books, fees, or another other related expenses for the student’s first semester of college.
Scholarship applicants must submit an essay discussing what they hope to accomplish in their personal and professional life after college. Two former teachers and one additional reader judge the essays, which must be 500 words or less. One winner is selected.
The first winner of the scholarship went on to attend Harvard University, while last year’s winner is currently attending the University of Kentucky.
Murphy plans to continue to offer the scholarship annually.
