The new biocompatible resins can be used with the Form 3B and Form 2 SLA 3D printers to print custom trays, splints, and temporary crown and bridge restorations.
Formlabs Dental has released three new biocompatible materials for the Form 3B and Form 2 SLA 3D printers. The new materials include the Custom Tray Resin, Dental LT Clear Resin (V2), and Temporary CB Resin.
The company’s Custom Tray Resin is a fast-printing biocompatible material for custom impression trays, while the Dental LT Clear Resin (V2) is the company’s second-generation, long-term biocompatible material for splints and occlusal guards. The Temporary CB Resin is a tooth-colored resin for 3D printing of temporary crown and bridge restoration in four VITA shades.
Formlabs developed the Custom Tray Resin and Dental LT Clear Resin (V2) in-house, in the company’s FDA registered, ISO 13485 certified facility with an ISO Class 8 certified cleanroom for dental and medical materials development. The Temporary CB Resin was developed in partnership with BEGO, a company specializing in the field of prosthodontics and implant dentistry.
Resin for Custom Impression Trays
Custom Tray Resin is a Class I biocompatible resin, ideal for directly 3D printing impression trays for implants, dentures, crowns and bridges, and other comprehensive cases. Using the resin, users can print full impression trays in under 1 hour using 200 micron layer heights—which helps reduce labor time and enables higher throughput.Â
According to the company, this resin is its most affordable biocompatible material and is currently shipping to the United States, Canada, the EU, and select other countries.
Color-Corrected Resin for Splints
The Dental LT Clear Resin (V2) was developed to be highly durable and resistant to fracture for creating appliances that can more easily withstand the daily use and accidental drops by patients. The resin is color-corrected to print clear splints that can be polished to high optical transparency and resist discoloration over time.
Because the resin is produced in-house, the company was able to reduce the retain price by 12.5% (might vary by region). Dental LT Clear Resin (V2) is currently shipping in the United States and other select countries.
Temporary Crown and Bridge Restoration Option
Temporary CB Resin is a tooth-colored resin for 3D printing of temporary crown and bridge restorations, inlays, and veneers. Indicated for up to seven-unit bridges and available in four VITA shades, the resin’s properties include the aesthetics patients want, with a low tendency to age and discolor, low plaque accumulation, and high comfort due to low cold and heat sensitivity.
Dentists can use traditional temporary cements to fix restorations produced with Temporary CB Resin for up to 12 months. For optimal aesthetics and performance, the company recommends a stainless steel build platform when printing with Temporary CB Resin. This build platform is compatible wth the Form 3B and Form 2, but is not validated for use with other materials.
Temporary CB Resin is currently available in the EU and select other countries.
