The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) and AAO Services Inc are working with the Academy of Orthodontic Assisting (AOA) Academy, a company that provides online, self-paced orthodontic staff training, to promote the AOA Academy’s curriculum to orthodontic staff members around the world.

“I encourage members to enroll their staff in the AOA Academy online training program,” says Don Joondeph, DDS, president of the AAO. “This program teaches the fundamentals of orthodontics and is designed for self-paced home study. A trained, more knowledgeable staff will instill confidence and assist in the delivery of quality patient care. This training program can also boost staff members’ satisfaction in the workplace and their professionalism.”

The Web-based AOA Academy training program, called “Orthodontic Assisting—Technique and Theory,”  consists of a series of 14 sequential lessons. The lesson topics range from oral and dental anatomy to x-ray safety. A thorough student textbook complements the online lessons and covers anatomy, physiology, techniques, and risk-management.

Individual tuition for the online program is $1,200. Orthodontists can purchase an annual subscription for $1,800. The subscription provides 1 year of unlimited access for up to 12 staff members in a practice. Thereafter, it is renewable annually for $500.

In addition to the Web-based curriculum, the AAO and AOA Academy plan to offer elective hands-on clinical efficiency retreats during future AAO meetings.
