OrthoAccel Technologies Inc, Houston, received a Bronze Award at the 23rd Annual Excellence in Design competition for its AcceleDent System, a device designed to accelerate orthodontics. The system was recognized by Appliance Design magazine in the Medical, Laboratory, & Test Equipment category. The winners will be featured in the June 2010 issue of Appliance Design.

The AcceleDent System is intended for 20 minutes of daily use. Patients bite down on the mouthpiece, which connects to an activator to deliver a light, pulsing force. The AcceleDent System also includes a travel shell and a charging port to recharge the device battery and provide compliance usage information that is captured by amicroprocessor in the activator.

While the AcceleDent System is currently sold in the United Kingdom and Australia, it is neither FDA-cleared nor FDA-approved, and is currently investigational only in the United States. OrthoAccel anticipates the conclusion of a US clinical trial at the UT Health Science Center in San Antonio later this year.
