Church & Dwight introduces Arm & Hammer PM™, a toothpaste that reduces the buildup of plaque and odor-causing germs that accumulate in the mouth overnight.
According to Jeff Golub-Evans, DDS, the buildup of plaque and germs in the mouth is the result of decreased saliva flow. Golub-Evans says that while we sleep, the production of saliva slows down, causing the buildup of bacteria.
The company conducted three clinical trials to demonstrate the benefits of Arm & Hammer’s PM. Patients either brushed with PM, a fluoride toothpaste, or water. The results showed that PM controlled bad breath for several hours after use and reduced the bacteria that causes bad breath. To measure nighttime plaque control, two 3-day studies were conducted. Patients brushed with either PM or with a fluoride toothpaste. The next morning, the patients’ plaque levels were examined. In both studies, PM controlled overnight plaque growth better than the fluoride toothpaste.
PM is available in two formulations: Bold Mint, which combines zinc citrate with baking soda and peroxide; and Fresh Mint, which combines zinc citrate with polishing agents and extra strength fluoride.
