The annual event on July 7 encourages parents to schedule orthodontic evaluations for children by age 7 to detect and address developmental concerns early.
The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) is holding its annual Smiles at 7 Day on July 7 to raise awareness about the importance of early orthodontic evaluations for children. The event encourages parents to schedule an exam with an orthodontic specialist by the time their child reaches age 7.
Clinical Benefits of Early Evaluation
By age 7, most children have developed enough permanent teeth for an orthodontist to identify potential issues. Early detection and treatment can guide the growth of facial and jaw bones and create adequate space for incoming permanent teeth. According to the AAO, identifying these issues early can help patients avoid more invasive or costly procedures in the future.
“Smiles at 7 Day is an easy reminder to the public about the critical role of orthodontic evaluations in a child’s dental health. Seeing an orthodontist by age 7 allows for early detection of bite issues, teeth crowding, or other developmental concerns, often resulting in less invasive treatments and better long-term outcomes,” says Dr Michael G Durbin, president of the AAO, in a release.
Practice Participation and Outreach
Orthodontic practices across the US are participating in the event through in-office activities, community outreach programs, and social media campaigns. The initiative aims to educate families and help practitioners build relationships within their communities.
Founded in 1900, the AAO represents 19,000 orthodontist members throughout the US, Canada, and internationally.
