Cheryl E. Mounts, MS, CAE, executive vice president of the American Board of Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS), recently announced her retirement after 19 years of service. Her official retirement date is August 30, 2013.

Mounts joined the ABOMS as Executive Secretary in 1994. During her tenure, she was responsible for transitioning the written qualifying examination to a computer-based testing model and managed the standardization of the oral certifying examination by moving the examination to a professional testing setting. She directed the expansion of the organization’s operations, orchestrating the move to its current larger facility in 2005 and managing a staff that has evolved from three to eight professionals.

In 2006, under Mounts’ guidance, the ABOMS implemented a rigorous certification maintenance process to ensure the highest standards of certification and patient care are achieved.

Mounts was named executive director in 2003 and executive vice president in 2012. Since joining the ABOMS, nearly 2,900 oral and maxillofacial surgeons have been Board-certified.

Lance O. Hoxie will assume the role of ABOMS executive vice president on September 3, 2013.
