braces_treatmentThe U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a consumer update on braces, outlining how they have evolved from the “Metal Mouth” days that many consumers remember from their youth.

The update explains to consumers that orthodontic treatment is for both children and adults, and that metal braces today are smaller and less obtrusive. In addition, clear and color bracket options are now available.

The consumer update, which is formatted as a Q&A put together by dental experts at the FDA, also discusses how clear aligners work, treatment lengths, and why a retainer may be necessary after braces are removed.

The FDA points out to consumers that it is responsible for reviewing all these devices for safety and effectiveness and, as appropriate, granting marketing authorization for the devices before they can be sold.
