The American Association of Orthodontists has formed a new task force to evaluate emerging research and recommend policy updates for sleep-disordered breathing.
The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) has established a seven-member Sleep-Disordered Breathing Task Force to evaluate evolving research and clinical practices. The initiative is part of the organization’s broader effort to monitor developments and update clinical guidance for the specialty.
Evaluating Sleep-Disordered Breathing
The newly formed task force is designed to examine emerging research and challenges to the AAO’s current position on sleep-disordered breathing. The group brings together orthodontic and medical experts to collaborate with other organizations, monitor developments in the broader conversation, and recommend how AAO policies and clinical resources should evolve.
According to the AAO, this formal review process helps determine if new evidence warrants changes to existing guidance, confirms that current positions remain sound, or recognizes the need for more evidence.
Addressing Artificial Intelligence
Earlier this year, the organization released a position paper on artificial intelligence, put together by the Task Force on Artificial Intelligence in Orthodontics. This group examined clinical oversight, patient safety, transparency, accountability, and professional responsibility as AI-enabled tools became more prevalent in the specialty. The paper provides a framework for the development, implementation, and oversight of AI technologies in orthodontic care. The framework reinforces the role of the orthodontist as the informed final decision-maker in patient care.
